Questions to Ask
- Are you an attorney?
- Do you exclusively practice in the area of Social Security disability?
- Do you have a local office?
- Will my first appointment be with the person who will go with me to my hearing?
Choosing WHO you want to represent you in a Social Security Disability claim can be overwhelming. There are LOTS of choices all promising the same thing.
A person does not have to be an attorney to represent someone on a Social Security disability claim. There are advocates, whom you see advertised on television, and non-attorney representatives.
Most attorneys who represent people on Social Security disability claims also practice in several other areas of law. They may not have an in-depth understanding of the rules and regulations of the Social Security Administration.
There are representatives who are local and there are representatives who are out-of-state who come into Tennessee for your hearing.
With some attorneys and non-attorney advocates the person who talks with you or meets with you at your first appointment may not be the person who will go with you to your hearing. You may not talk with the attorney or non-attorney advocate until a few days before or on the day of your hearing.
- I am an attorney.
- Social Security disability is the only thing I do.
- I am local.
- You will talk with me at your first appointment and I will go with you to your hearing.
I am a local attorney who only represents people on their Social Security disability claims. I will discuss your claim with you at your first appointment and I will go with you to your hearing. Because I am local, I know the employees at the local Social Security and hearing offices. If you have to go to a hearing I know the judges who are going to hear your case and I know what issues they will want to know about.
